The Department of English, Rhetoric and Writing, and Media Communication emphasizes courses and degrees that help students learn and apply writing strategies, communication skills, reading proficiencies, presentational strategies, convergent-media proficiencies, and critical thinking to enhance their academic, professional, and personal endeavors.

Effective communication and analytical skills are perhaps the most important in today’s information-driven society. In your literature and writing classes, you will gain an appreciation of literature and its historical importance, and you will learn to formulate your own ideas in ways that inform, enlighten, and persuade.

Graduates with degrees from this department go on to find employment in a variety of fields, from business and banking to education and entertainment.

Teaching English as a Second Language Minor

This 18-credit hour minor is designed for those who wish to teach English as a second language domestically and abroad. Courses include Second Language Acquisition, Teaching Methods, and Assessment.  Students obtaining the minor in TESL (18-hours) will also receive the Teaching English as a Second Language (15-hours) Certificate of Proficiency.
